Cooking class
10 May 2014 | Yacht Haven Marina
overcast and cool
Well, cooking class was great. We met up with one of the guides at the local market and got a tour of all the stalls getting clued into what was what with all the exotic fruits and veggies. We'd seen many of what she--actually a he dressed in woman clothes-many times in the past, but had no idea what they were or what they tasted like. She got samples and bought bits and pieces so we could taste them, We stayed for over an hour before we took off for the school. Glad we scouted the route out the day before. Made it much easier to find. We ended up with 27 people in the class filling just about every seat in the class room. They took us through two different types of curry dishes as well as a dessert dish and a couple more I can't remember. Sorry, don't have my notes in front of me. After each instruction, we were taken to individual cooking stations and with an instructor for each 4 students, we made the dishes. We cut and chopped and used a mortar and pestle to get the herbs and spices ready for mixing with other ingredients. The best was getting to eat what we made. A very well organized school with a restaurant beside it. All were foreigners--gee what a surprise with a good mix of men to women. Class didn't end till after four o'clock so it was a long class.
We took Xander and Szonic over to Patong Beach and their hotel so they could have some fun exploring the biggest tourist area on the island. It was made for them with lots to see and hear and do. I guess they finally crashed just after midnight, not getting up till eleven o'clock the next morning. We, meanwhile drove back to the marina and had another quiet night in front of the tv screen. Now that we have power, I've fired up our nice flat screen tv so it's no more watching on a small computer screen.
On the way back from dropping off the kids, we stopped at a light and quickly had about 15 scooters and motor bikes pass us as we sat at the light. About half way through the red light, one took off and suddenly, they all went through the red light. Before the light turned green, we had another 15 waiting in front of us. Cars, buses, trucks--everyone goes through red lights here--no big deal as there are no police in cars to stop them. We saw a pickup truck with 18 people in the back bed sitting on 2 X 6s laid across from side to side all hanging on as it went down the road. "Rules, we don't need no stinking rules". We've almost gotten used to motor cycles coming straight down the wrong side of the road at us. Some times it's too much trouble or inconvenient to get to the other side of the road so they just go down the wrong side. There are few places to make U turns so lines of cars just start backing up on the main road, sometimes two across. Tracy has found it much easier to sit in the back seat so she can't see everything that's happening on the road around us.
Today, we are off for a tour of the Hongs. Small islands with coves in the center that we will be swimming and kayaking through. It goes till after Sundown so hopefully it will be a clear night so we can see the stars as we glide along. I'll let you know.
