Oh what a day on anchor!

15 October 2015
Today started out calm in the anchorage. The seas were darn near flat. As they say "the calm before the storm" and it is so true. With it being so calm after yesterdays constant winds of 20-25 knots, it was earily quiet. Most of the wind died off late last night. We sit at ancor with Mahe Mahe about 100 yards away. Early this morning, Running Tide came through the south pass and came down south and joined us. We were up to three boat with just Pippistrelle due in later. We got started in on repairing our mainsail early this morning while it was still calm in the anchorage. We pulled it off the boom and set it up on the stern deck. Out came our sewing machine. We inspected the sail and figured out that while it was going to take some work, we could pretty well fix it ourselves. It took a good bit of work getting a square peg(the big bulk of the mainsail) in a round hole(the space in the sewing machine that you feed the material you are sewing). It was a tight fit and in the end, we had to sew as far as we could from one end and then turn the machine around and stitch from the other side of the sail over lapping what we had already sewed. We put in three line of zig zag stitches just to make sure it didn do it again. As we were about half done, we were visited by some men in a runabout letting us know we had anchored in a "Marine Sanctuary" and we needed to move. This was all communicated in Portugese with just a hint of English. Is it marked on a chart(NO). Is there any info on the net about it(NO) Well, the three of us discussed it and with a big blow due in shortly, we jointly decided to stay put. As you can guess, this didn't sit well with the men that had come out so a short while later, another boat came to visit, this time with more official looking men on board(one had a rifle). "Let us see your Documentation and passports" we were told. Oh Cr *p! Mosambique has a reputation for taking your passports and holding them for ransom. But, not this time. The men showed us where we needed to move to--out next to Running TIde and off they went visiting Mahe Mahe on the way. Well the wind was now starting to come up and we had a good north wind of about 10 knots and the seas were beginning to start getting restless. We pulled up the anchor and headed out to where we were told to anchor as the winds piped up to the 20 -25 knot range. Gee, we were having so much fun!?! Oh, I forgot, it started to rain too. The first we have seen in weeks. Figures, doesn't it? We dropped the anchor, got it set, put on the snubber and stopped for lunch(still raining). It's now 1500 and it's still blowing outside and we have about a two foot swell coming by. We just got joined by Pippistrelle in the anchorage so we are now up to four boats. The forecast is for the winds to go up to 35 knots during the night so there is more to come. We are prepared with the anchor drag alarm set. We are almost done with the sail repair but need to use the sewing machine to make a few more patches but we have plenty of time as the weather front that is upon us will be here for a few days. WInds are set to come out of the south over the next couple of days in the 25 to 30 knot range and since Richards Bay is south of here, it looks like we aren't going anywhere anytime soon. Since we had some down time yesterday in the blow, I made some Pumpkin Spice bread. Cleared another item out of our cabinets. We are slowly getting our stores down so that we can restock with more up to date food while in South Africa. We are still eating food we put on board back in the US and Mexico. The kids are enjoying our time at anchor finally being able to walk up right instead of at an angle as we heeled over in the wind. They actually come out and visit now that it's quiet. I'll let you know what's happening over the next few days. I am happy to report that Night Fly got into Richards Bay this morning after getting slammed with 40 knot winds last night. Sure glad they made it safely in. The kids and Tracy are napping and I will probably be joining them shortly.

OK, sounds like a restaurant I want to try. Nothing wrong with a skull on the sign.
