We get hauled out tomorrow.
25 April 2016 | Chagaramous Harbor, Trinidad
Bill
It's been a busy few days, both for some fun and some work. Sunday afternoon, we came back to the main harbor and headed in to play some more "Mexico Train Dominoes". Started at 1330 and didn't quit till close to 1630. We met up with Bob and Hella from Explorer, another couple of cruisers we'd met a short time ago in Grenada. They came down here the same time we did and have been around Trinidad for close to 20 years, off and on. They told us about a nice little cove called Scotland Bay, a few miles northwest of the main harbor. Nice and protected but normally full of power boats during the weekend but most leave by 1700. We took off at the same time as as always the other boat got there much faster than we did. As we neared the harbor, one of the big party catamarans came in in front of us with music blaring out of speakers on their boat. I'd have been deaf if I'd been on it. Not sure how the people stood for it. As they entered, About 10 of the smaller power boats that were in there took off. A few stayed, mainly another group of partiers that was also pounding music into the cove. By about 1800, all were just about gone and the cove got nice and quiet, well, OK, a bit quieter as there were some local camped out on shore with their generator running for lights and probably to keep the beer coolers cold. Yesterday, Monday, we climbed into Puff and went the three miles back to the main harbor to see how much longer we were going to have to wait for our haul out. When we got to Powerboats, we were greeted by Brent, the yard manager. He told us he had just sent us an email that our contractor was ready to go and to come in and make plans for the haulout. Perfect timing. We set it up for getting hauled on Wednesday about 1400. This will give us time to get in place and set up before the Sun goes down. It gets a bit windy in the afternoon and since I have to back in, it's going to be fun getting into the slipway for the crane. Now we've been in several yards over the years, the worst being of course Sea Marine just outside of Port Townsend(crooks!). Brent darn near scared us with his cheerful can do attitude. Never have seen the likes of it, except of course with Kumer in Phonipei back in Micronesia. Brent promises us a wonderful experience while we are here. I hit him with all our concerns and he just kept coming back with "what ever you need, we can get it done for you". He will be overseeing our work as the main manager for the yard and will work with us and the contractor if we have any concerns. Most of the contractors have worked in the yard for 10-15 years! Tomorrow it starts. During our trip in from Scotland Bay, we were routinely splashed by the larger faster fishermen as they passed us. We were quite soaked by the time we got to the harbor but we dried after a while so no big deal. Once we got our emails and had a nice lunch at the "Roti Hut" we headed back to Zephyr. The Roti Hut is right inside Powerboats yard so we will probably be eating there from time to time but you have to act fast as they open at 1130 and were just about out of food when we got there at 1230. Tracy got the last Beef with rice and I got the last Goat with rice. Came with sort of a spinach blob, some yellow goo on the rice, a nice spoonful of Goat or Beef. I had the Goat with a bit a hot sauce on it. Nice but not cheap at over $7.00US. Foods not cheap here for sure. we took off in Puff for Zephyr and got there almost dry. A much better trip back as most of the fishing boats were gone. As we sat on board, the fishing boat for the family on shore slowly passed us heading out of the cove its bow line floating in the water. I jumped into Puff(after Tracy told me about it) and retrieved it for the family on shore. About 1700, Bob and Hella came over for drinks and snacks and conversations during our "Sun Downer Party". It went well into the evening, each of us swapping stories about past travels. This morning, we pulled up the anchor and motored back to the main harbor so we would be there in time for the "Maxi taxi" to the local grocery store/ shopping center. There were six of us in the "cab". We were allotted 90 minutes for shopping in the grocery store as well as the shopping center. We picked up about a half cart load before we headed back, loaded up Puff and headed back for a some what quiet afternoon. Lots of boats, both big and small just love to blow through the anchorage at all hours of the day and night. Far from a quiet place to stay. So, tomorrow the work starts. We get hauled and then put in place. The yard electrician will come over and get us all hooked up to shore power. Our contractor will be over shortly after that to discuss the plans for the removal of our teak decks. I won't miss them. They looked great in 2007 but by now, they are long since over the hill. Having done about 34,000 miles since then and over eight years, well, it's time they left.
