On the hard.
27 April 2016 | Power Boats yard
Bill/cooler since the rain
We launched Puff early in the day and went in to finish our paperwork for our haul out. Once done, we visited the Internet room, up stairs in one of the buildings in the yard. Nice fast Internet so that's a plus. With our haul out set for 1400, we took off for Zephyr to get the back stay ready for pulling. The lift here is just a tad to small for our boat so we had the choice of the forestay or the back stay. One had to come off. The forestay has our Harken roller fuller on it and the back stay has our radar( no longer seems to work) as well as our SSB antenna. I disconnected the wire from the SSB antenna tuner inside the stern cabin and Tracy slowly pulled the wire out(messenger line attached). The wire connection fitting promptly got pulled off the end of the wire but it did come out onto the deck. Next, we had to get that wire out of the tube that it goes in that takes it up the back stay. We have what's called a GAM antenna. It clips onto the back stay and works great. We'll, it did till the connector popped off.. The GPS that had also been attached to the tube had failed years ago so we took the time to snip and remove that wire while we were there. In the end, we got everything taken care of the the radar pole lowered onto the deck. We put blue masking tape on the back stay fitting so we will know how much to tighten the wire when we reinstall it tomorrow.
Our haul out was delayed due to a problem with a boat that was set to come out at 1300 so we didn't get called over to be hauled out till 1430. Since the 1300 boat was still in the slings when we got there, we had to wait for it to get placed before they could haul us out. It all went smoothly but now it was to late in the day for a power wash so they just scraped the hull to get all the growth off. When we left St Helena, our hull was clean. When we got here, it was still some what clean but spending time here as well as in Grenada, well we had out on a nice healthy growth of barnacles over much of the hull and the prop. While the workmen scraped the hull, I cleaned the prop. Best to do it when it's first out of the water and comes off much easier than waiting even one night. In the end, it looked pretty good.
They hauled us to our slot and put us on stands to keep us standing upright. Since it was now approaching 1600 and the yard was closing, there was no time for the electrician to come hook us up to power. I taxed my brain but figured out that if you take a plug and stick it in a socket, you just might get power for you boat and batteries. I was smart enough to check the plug just to make sure it was 110 volts and not 220. Sure don't want to fry our systems.
We both headed up for showers and then hiked over to the yards restaurant for drinks and maybe a dinner. We opted for dinner as well as two Caribbean Rangers. These are beer mixed with lemonade. Sound strange but is really quite tasty. At just 2% alcohol, you sure aren't going to get drunk on them. We opted for two Hamburgers with fries and the two drinks and the bill was $25.00US. I've written before that food isn't cheap here. We won't be eating out much during our stay that's for sure.
Tomorrow, we have out deck puller coming at 0800. He stopped by as we were getting pulled and we discussed plans. The rigger will be back to reattach the back stay but I'll have that all taken care of before he shows up.
Oh, I forgot to tell you that just as soon as they put us in our slot and took off, it started to pour. An honest to goodness downpour. With some fires still going on the island, it should help put them out. It's still the dry season but since we have been here, it's rained just about every day. Just our luck now that we are having the decks removed.
