Spanish Cay-Feb 13-17

17 February 2009
*We arrived at Spanish Cay about 8 AM when we called the marina
on the VHF radio,he said they were full, but could move boats
around, but we shoudl come on in. When we came in there were
only 2 boats there! He said he was joking about it because he
thought we could see that there weren't many boats at the marina-
we couldn't see over the breakwater/jetty
*Mearle helped tie us up-beautiful marina. I asked if I could check in
to customs-he said the customs officer would be coming to the
island later. He said I didn't need to put up the quaranteen flag and
that we could both go ashore. They were very lax in following the
rules-nice
*The customs and Immigration rule is that when you first come to a
country, you raise the yellow quaranteen flag-when you stop-only
the captain goes to shore with the passports and boat documents.
After you have taken care of the paperwork, and in the Bahama's,
paying $150.00 for boats under 36ft. and $300.00 over 36ft, you go
back to your boat, take down the quaranteen flag and raise their
countries flag as a courtesy flag-on the starboard side.
*The dock fee was only $2.50/foot-not bad
*The two other boats left-we thought we had the island to ourselves-
not to be-several other boats came in
*We had planned to have cocktails on the marina deck and dinner at
the restaurant, so we invited the other cruisers to join us. There
are:
Lee and Barb-on Wind Dancer
IB and Rebecca on Passport
Claire and Quinten on ClaireBouyant
Warren and Diane on ?
Jean-Marc and Marian on Oddysee

*It was a great eavening-the dockmaster, Richard, from Holland,
was also the shef!Great meal- There are only 3 residents on the
island
*We had a great couple of days-beautiful pool and hot tub-where
Mike spent many hours. Everyone thought the pool was too cold-I
loved it and was the only one to go in
*We walked most of the island-sans small airport runway. Beautiful
beach/water. Found a hammock, and lounge chairs, so we took
advantage of those and put the chairs in the water and enjoyed the
view. I walked the beach and found a live conch. He was dangling
out of the shell when I picked him up-ugh-couldn't eat those. That is
one of the big items on the menu's here! No thanks. It looks like
they are landscaping all over-much more to do.
*One of the couples, IB and Rebecca, becamed engaged in the
bar one night. It was late and I went back to the boat after
spending time in the hot tub with them and Mike, so wasn't there for
the big event.
*Richard told us that this is the offseason-hard to believe
*We had to wait for better weather/less wind before we could leave-we were all headed for Green Turtle Cay
*We stayed 4 nights-had only planned on 1 or 2
