Well, Rockland is definitely a great place that we will visit again! The day started with a 7am walk to the bakery where I discovered that they are really good at making flaky pastry...After buying more than I should have, back to the boat where I did work, Anne went to the grocery store and Evelyn and Leslie went and explored some of the art galleries and found some wondrous creatures...
After my noon meeting (conducted by telephone like almost all of my meetings), we re-convened on the boat and prepared to get underway, including a visit to the fuel dock. During the night a critical change had taken place: The winds shifted to the northwest, making for very favorable sailing for those of us heading down the coast. Waiting until after noon to depart allowed us to take advantage of the tidal current to boost our speed out of Penobscot Bay.Not that it needed much boosting! The forecast 10-15 with gusts to 20 knots became 20-25 knots with higher gusts and, even with both our main and headsail reefed we were sailing at hull speed, and making more than 8 knots over ground! Fast, but hard work navigating around a whole host of islands and shoals while adapting to the strong, gusty winds. It was a relief to come into Tenants Harbor and pick up a mooring for the night.
