The long and winding road...
09 December 2010 | Back River, GA
Well, its still cold but not quite as cold as yesterday. Nevertheless we still have 15 knots or more of winds from the north and the helm is a cold place to be! Cold and winds don't deter us though: We still logged almost sixty miles today. Or rather, Anne and Evelyn did: I got to drive for the first couple of hours but then spent the rest of the day below decks working. . . I missed the scenery, but I was warm!
The ICW really winds around through the low country of Georgia. You may travel twenty miles on the rivers and sounds to get to someplace less than ten miles from your starting point but oh, what a beautiful, roundabout way of getting there. Interspersed between the winding sections are long runs up and down sounds where many rivers converge to empty into the sea. In these, we were often able to unfurl our headsail and get a boost from the wind. (If the wind's going to be this cold it should at least do some work!)
We anchored tonight in a very nice remote anchorage. You can tell it's a good anchorage because a local shrimp boat came in to anchor here, too. No worries, though: it's a very big anchorage. It is also a place the dolphins enjoy and Leslie spent the remaining daylight after we anchored watching the wildlife from the cockpit.
Oh yes: That's Evelyn under all that colthing! Good thing we're down here in the warm southern states!
