Good timing

You never know what you'll see...(it's a statue)
Today was a day of careful timing that paid off. Last night we looked at the proximity of our anchorage to the Cape Fear River (30 miles away) and consulted the tide tables to determine that, if we could get there by 11:30 we would catch a favorable tide up the river. The Cape Fear is big enough that the currents in both directions are impressive so its worth thinking about the timing.
I got up at 0600 this morning and by 0620 we were underway. Fortune favors the prepared: We arrived at the Cape Fear River at 1140. As the tide tables promised, we found the current flooding up the river and we surged upstream making 8.5 knots over ground. Even after the river was well behind us, we continued to just get lucky with the tidal currents and made good speeds all day. When we finally dropped the hook to anchor for the night, some eighty miles separated us from last nights anchorage.
This weekend has seen a couple of good long days but, as a result, we're looking forward to a couple of shorted days to start the work week.
