Let's Go And Hide In Port!
We left mid-morning on Monday enjoying the sunny skies and enough of a light breeze for a gentle sail towards our intended destination of S'Arenal…..and then the skies darkened….the thunder began to crash….the lightning began to flash...oh here we go again!
The heavens opened, the wind blew up to 35 knots – big gusts as the storms squalled back and forth (thankfully, we'd dropped the sails before all of this hit us). We chugged along under engine towards S'Arenal and once we'd arrived in the anchorage, which was relatively sheltered, the wind dropped to a manageable 15 knots or so however, the rain persisted for the rest of the day. We watched anxiously as the electric storms wallopped back and forth across the Bahia de Palma – we were grateful that they left us alone after the morning's performance!
On Tuesday morning, after having checked the forecast we made the decision that it was going to be no fun at all at anchor with the potential for 30 – 40 knot winds and more storms so just after lunchtime, we high-tailed across the Bahia and took a berth in RCN Palma for two nights. This is a great marina, right on the edge of the city and with reasonable rates for the Med….we were happy to be tied up alongside.
Fortuitously, our friends Pete and Jean were staying in Palma for a few days and we were able to meet up with them for a couple of really nice meals in the evenings and on Wednesday for a trip to the Joan Miro Foundation gallery and sculpture park. Miro seemed to have some fixation with large ladies and birds, combining the two images quite frequently. Not necessarily my cup of tea but the gallery and garden are definitely worth a visit. This tapestry wall hanging certainly caught my eye.
