Thursday, March 13, 2014 We headed out the reef at 8:30 am into a 15 knot headwind with about 4' seas. We decided to tack offshore for speed, but that turned out to be self defeating because the further out we got the higher the wind speed and the bigger the seas got, so the potential for increased speed was literally dashed against the oncoming waves. Another catamaran the same size as ours left at the same time, but they never raised the main; rather they motored near shore to get the slight protection afforded by the night lee of the island and instead of our 6' seas, they had 4' seas and less wind. They arrived at the protected anchorage of Isla Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island), about 10 minutes ahead of us, with dry decks. This island is part of the US National Park system. We dinghied to the huge dock near the park buildings and hiked up to the top of the island, where the now-defunct lighthouse is. It was an easy hike on a cactus-bordered trail to the top where we had a great view along the south coast of Puerto Rico.
