An isolated, quiet anchorage

After a morning beach walk and breakfast in a sidewalk cafe, we headed east along the south coast of Vieques to the easternmost bay, Bahia Salinas del Sur. There was only one other boat there in this quiet bay with a half mile of lovely sand beach, the bay protected by a large coral reef. This part of Vieques Island was used as a gunnery range for the US Navy for many years, and the Puerto Ricans wanted it back. Eventually, a few years ago, the Navy gave it up. Now there are signs all along the beach warning not to walk on the beach or anywhere in the area. We, of course, ignored the signs to walk ourselves and Toby on the fine sand beach. We figured it must be pretty safe because there is a herd of wild horses who frequent this beach at night, and in the morning the sand is churned up from their passage.

It was so peaceful in this anchorage that we decided to spend a second night. On the second day, we took the dink out to the reef and had some great snorkeling, bringing back a lobster and a couple of glass-eyed snappers for our barbeque.

BTW: the Rocna once again set immediately in a grass bottom. We're falling in love with it.
