what to do?
10 December 2011 | Marsh Harbour
Howard. sunny/windy/80F
The weather forecast for the next several days doesn’t sound good, strong easterly winds, rain squalls etc. We could stay here at Green Turtle Cay but would much rather head further South, what to do? Today is the better of the next several to come so we decide to make a run for it. The wind is out of the East 15 to 20 knots but we should reach the Whale passage at slack tide so that will be good. The Sea of Abaco gets very shallow around the Whale Cay area making it necessary to take the Whale Cay channel out into the Atlantic Ocean, go around Whale Cay and come back into the Sea of Abaco again via the Loggerhead channel. The seas really build up coming through the channels when there are strong easterly winds and it’s even worst with an ebb tide. Our timing is good and we arrive at the channel around slack tide, there are large waves but none are breaking so it’s a go. It wasn’t as bad as we had been expecting and we’ve been through worst, it was slow going punching our way into the waves with our little 40 horsepower engine but once we got through the Whale Cay passage, we raised sails and it was practically a down hill run from there until we reached Marsh Harbour where we plan on spending the next number of days waiting out the weather
