Christmas

25 December 2012 | Lynyard Cay
Howard/ sunny 80F
After waiting in Lake Worth for a few days on a good weather window to cross the Gulf Stream we said good bye to Florida and headed for the Bahamas, the crossing was uneventful during the 24 hour trip until just before our arrival at Green Turtle Cay when a strong squall went by bringing with it high winds, drenching rain and pretty much zero visibility, it passed quickly by and we anchored just outside the harbour entrance. After checking into customs and obtaining a cruising permit we decided to take a mooring in Black Sound for a couple of days before moving on further South, the weather was unsettled and at $10.00 a night we felt a lot safer swinging on a mooring than on a anchor. The weather improved and it looked good for getting around the whale, a bad piece of water at times especially with a strong Easterly swell, it was a bit lumpy going around but not bad, we’ve made the trip in much worst conditions. Then it was on to Marsh Harbour where we spent about a week at anchor, it’s the hub of the Abacos and anything you may need can be found there, we topped up our fuel, got some more provisions etc. and done some socializing, it’s a busy spot and some boats spend most of the winter there and sailing to the near by cays. One day our friends on Scotch Mist showed up to anchor near us, it’s happened a few times now that after not seeing them for months and months, we look over our shoulder and there they are, it was great seeing them again and catching up on all the latest news. It was decided we should all spend Christmas together so we both headed to Lynyard Cay and anchored off the shore, to await Santa’s arrival and for a suitable weather window before heading further South towards Spanish Wells, hopefully in the next day or so the seas will settle down and we will be on our way.
