Boat from Haiti.

Lately there's been a bit of excitement here at Hog Cay, a boat from Haiti showed up with around 55 people on board, it wasn't a large boat and it's amazing that so many people were on board. We saw a coast guard helicopter flying around very low to the water and later landing on shore after the Haitian boat was towed to shore, the people were eventually flown back to Haiti no doubt to try again at some future time. It happens quite often in the Bahamas that a Haitian boat will show up, sometimes being wrecked on the shore in the process. Life in Haiti must be very difficult for people to risk their lives in order to escape and they pay a substantial amount of money to do so.
A few days ago while anchored at Southside Bay with a couple of other boats, we were awakened early in the morning by a noise. People were on shore speaking Spanish, come day light a small wooden skiff was not far from us with several people on board; they went around the point and were not seen again. They were not local people and we feel that they came from Cuba. You just never know who is around, I've never heard of anyone being boarded or attacked but it makes you wonder just how safe you are, we sometimes anchor by ourselves with no one close by, maybe that's not such a good idea but it's one of the main reasons we come down here
