Home and Together again

It's been a long three months and we missed the dogs dreadfully. Robyn, Ethan and Josh, between them, did a marvellous job of looking after the house and dogs which meant we did not need to worry about them......thanks guys!

Coming home

We were so excited to get into the lock at Shotley, our home port. Our adventure almost over. This photo was taken by Dad.

Leg 38 Ramsgate to Shotley, finally home!

So, at 1430 yesterday afternoon we make it into the lock at Shotley to a very noisy reception as the lock keeper let off the siren to signal our arrival, fantastic! My Mum and Dad surprised us by being at the lock to greet us, perfect, as did Brian, our Day Skipper Instructor, and his wife Ann. I had [...]

Leg 37 Eastbourne to Dover which turned out to be Ramsgate!

Sunday 27th August and yet another glorious day. Steve and Hailey had left at 6am to go south back to Cowes. We left the berth at 7.30am to enter the Eastbourne lock at 8am. It was busy. We were in the lock with 9 other boat!

Leg 36 Brighton to Eastbourne

Got up early leaving the boys in bed to nip to the supermarket to stock up on provisions. After a bacon butty breakfast, we said goodbye to Josh at the bus stop; he was heading back to Norwich on the train. We would have loved to have him with us for longer but we're grateful he had made the effort [...]

Leg 35 Portsmouth to Brighton

We woke up at 5.30am to the most beautiful sunshine over Portsmouth. It was going to be a lovely day. With Josh on board, it was lovely to have his company and with a very slight sea it was the perfect trip. Before we left the harbour we took one last trip past the Queen Elizabeth. Leaving the harbour, [...]

Leg 34 Isle of Wight (Cowes) to Portsmouth

28 August 2017 | Haslar Marina, Portsmouth
Finally, we appear to be entering a period of settled weather, for the first time in 3 months! Thursday 24th August was a short leg of less than 10 miles across the Solent. Arguably, the best sailing area in the country, the Solent is beautiful! So we left Cowes at 9.20am and saw the Malcolm Miller (apparently a famous clipper ship, very posh!) on the way and reached Portsmouth by 11am. We navigated our way into the busy harbour avoiding large ships, ferries, hovercraft, war ships and other sailing boats.
Ray had been disappointed to miss the arrival of the Queen Elizabeth, the navy's newest aircraft carrier coming into Portsmouth, a couple of weeks ago and had to make do with watching it in bed, live on Facebook, so when we entered Portsmouth harbour he was thrilled to she her just a short distance up the channel. We sailed past her, keeping well clear of the police security launches enforcing an exclusion zone around her. She was awesome!
Disappointingly, the engine pipe that we had come into Portsmouth to collect had not arrived because the part is obsolete, Volvo don't make them anymore! Great! Ray managed to call a local dealer who had an old second hand one and, after a lot of messing about, he was happy to drop it off to Portsmouth, saving us a 2 hour bus ride, on his way home, all for the price of a bottle of Chardonnay for his wife.
Josh had travelled down on the train to spend a couple of days with us. It was great to see him. We had a meal out in a lovely restaurant and sat outside in the sun. We spent the afternoon in the shops on Gunwharf Quay underneath the Spinnaker tower.
After the exchange (wine for pipe), we headed back to the boat on the Gosport ferry. Ray fitted the pipe but to our disappointment it still leaked. Rays frustration was clear but we needed it fixed to get us home, so he put the old pipe back on and did as best he could to do a temporary fix. The weather looked good for our trip to Brighton tomorrow, it should be a good day.
