Sailing in La Paz
Yes sir, that was a fun race! I got to "do" foredeck with Ian who was a good and patient instructor. At the beginning my primary duty was to provide weight on one side of the boat and then the other when we tacked. My additional duty was to be sure I moved Ian's hat along with me when he helped to whip the sail around at each tack. Then we got to hoist the spinnaker and that was exciting! Tapatai is a beauty!
After the race there was an impromptu get together at our establishment of choice, La Costa Restaurant. One of the boats had run up on a rock and had to start their engine to get off, thereby disqualifying themselves from the race
. . . however, it appears that one of the unwritten rules is allowing a post-race gentlemanly discussion (over several dozen beers and/or double margaritas) to establish whether the engine was actually started or if, perhaps, it was the generator that was started. The conversation was hilarious and it remains to be seen what the outcome was. The race results were not immediately posted as the Race Committee (a committee of one - our friend Al Marchand) accidentally dropped his clipboard overboard. Needless to say, racing is very relaxed down here!
