Agua Verde Day 2

18 March 2013 | Agua Verde
Fred
Today was another clear beautiful day and we decided that we would take a hike to try to see some hand paintings that date back centuries. We were armed with a hand drawn map so we struck out across the bay in our dinghy with Bill and Sue behind us and beached the dinghies. Then up the hill and down the hill to the cemetery. What a sad little place with graves dating back to the 50's. It is in the low lying area and you can see where it was damaged by the big rains of last year. There are simple graves with stones mounded on top and some with somewhat elaborate concrete and rock structure. From there we head down a wash to an oasis of palms and a small lagoon where we are to get to the beach. It took several tries and different paths until we found the proper way to the beach. It was a rocky beach about ¾'s of a mile long and we were to look for a road that intersected the beach near the end. As we were walking along we came across a woman with 2 kids and she asked if we were going to see la pintura and the kid held up his hand. We said yes and she said for Cien pesos she would take us. Being armed with a custom hand drawn map we politely declined and went on our way. We got to the end of the beach and never saw a road. We turned left and went up over the dune to where we thought a road should be and found a dry bed with some tire tracks on it with a bunch shoe tracks so we thought we must be going in the right direction but alas, no such luck. We tramped around a bit but never found a trail or what would look like a likely spot someone would paint on the rocks hundreds of years ago. We thought that for 25 pesos each we should have taken her up on her offer to guide us. So we turned around and headed back through the oasis, past the cemetery and up the hill and down the hill to the beach where our dinghies sat patiently waiting for us. So off we went back to the boat for a sandwich, nap and some reading. Two more boats joined our little community and one of them radioed us that they were inviting us all for a cocktail party on the beach at 5pm and bring your own drink and something to share. So after showers we loaded up in the dinghy and went to the beach where we met some new people. We had a fun hour and a half and they all said that we would do it again tomorrow night and invite the other boats in the other coves. So we made the decision to stay one more day as we are hearing that Puerto Escondido is nothing to rush to as most of the services are not open. No fuel or gas and maybe no water. Since we have not been there we will leave a day later and head up there to check it out for ourselves. We also heard that the new resort hotel at Candeleros was friendly to cruisers last year but may not be as much this year. We were going to stop there on the way to Escondido to check it out and we heard today that you are welcome to come ashore, use their facilities and eat breakfast, lunch and dinner and have all you want to drink, all for $65 US per person! Now I see why the cruisers say the hotel is no longer friendly. So we will give it a drive by. So tomorrow will be more reading, napping, cribbage (Penny is up 3-0) and possibly a game or two of Mexican Train. Also a walk into the village as we now have heard that there are 3 tiendas and know where they are. Two don't have signs so you have to get directions.

We left San Diego on January 16, heading South al gusto - with a sketchy plan written in sand at low tide (that is a quote from my buddy Ellen Gallant!) Mexico lends itself to beautiful photos which we will try to honor.
