Durango, Silverton and Ouray
25 July 2012 | Ouray RV park
Fred/nice and cool and no rain yet
We left Mesa Verde in the morning and stopped in Mancos for gas and coffee and the best tasting cinnamon roll ever. Then on the road to Durango where we stopped and walked the town for an hour. Neat old town with lots of neat shops and I got a good deal on a leather belt that I had been looking for.
We got back on the road to Silverton and it was steep and twisty but some great scenery. The hills and switch backs were daunting to say the least and after climbing to 10,640 feet we went down into Silverton in 2nd gear. Silverton is a small town nestled in a valley and Red Mountain is aptly named as it is rusting! Beautiful colors and the river runs orange and reds. On our way to Ouray I had to stop so Penny could pick up some beautiful rocks for our yard.
Arrived in Ouray mid afternoon and checked into the Ouray RV Park. Nice place and real close to town.
That evening we went in to town and walked and found a good Italian restaurant named Bon Ton. Not sure the name is Italian but had a good chicken piccata and the best bread and butter ever. Finished with a coffee and crime brûlée with the couple at the next table that Penny invited over. Delightful couple, she from London and he from Costa Mesa. However he left Costa Mesa in 1956 and went into the military where he met his wife. They have lived in Santa Fe New Mexico and have for 40 years. They too are traveling in their RV and come to Ouray every year.
Tomorrow on to Montrose and Gunnison.
