Leg 1 Day 2&3
01 November 2014 | Turtle Bay
Fred
We finally get to sail! About noon we set the spinnaker and shut down the engine and sailed for 13 hours doing 7's and 8's with an occasional surf to 9 and touching 10 at one time. Had about 15 knots of true wind so all was good.
As we got pas Isla Benitos Brent and I went forward to jibe the spinnaker. Since it was dark and we had not jibed as a team yet we decided to pull the snuffer down and walk the snuffed sail around the headstay and then redeploy it. It worked great and came off without a hitch.
At 1 am I got up as it didn't feel like the boat was moving and sure enough, the wind had died down and we were doing 2 knots with the finish line about 15 miles. Since we had motored a lot another 3 hours wouldn't make a big difference since we were an unofficial for this leg and we wanted to get into Turtle Bay. So down with the spinnaker on on with tHe engine. Crossed the finish line about 4 am with another 20 miles to anchor.
Once at anchor the whole crew jumped into the 75 degree water for a swim and a batH. Once refreshed we went to town and to the Vera Cruz restaurant where we got lunch and Internet. At 3 we headed over to the baseball stadium where the whole field is covered in astro turf! Someone gave a great gift to the kids of Turtle Bay. There were about 15 fielders in the infield and another 15 or so in the outfield. Lots of local kids too. Richard was pitching non-stop to a long line of batters and Scout was represented by Liz and Eileen up to bat. Liz having done this before enlisted a local kid to run for her but Eileen didn't pick up on that and ran down to first base and limped back having pulled a few leg muscles. She found a kid to run on her next hit. The guys sat in the seats and cheered them on. It was amazing how many hit balls went right for Richard and tagged him in the privates and all around. Dangerous job being the pitcher.
Then back to the boat after buying a quart of vanilla and 1/2 quart of chocolate ice cream for dinner. Liz cooked a delicious pork roast and browned around the roast potatoes and carrots complete with gravy. Great meL in the cockpit of Scout with a great group of friends. Then on to the ice cream!! And to bed to finish off a wonderful day.
