Port Louis to Belle Ile and L'ile de Yeu

12 June 2015 | Brittany to the Vendee, France
The closest we came to landing on Belle ile

We motored to Port Louis from Benodet, no wind and soon no sun either. The bistrot Il Pirata was our reason for coming to this lovely old town. Another crew proclaimed them 'the best wood fired pizza in the world' to the happy patronne.

Belle ile was our next port. One of several islands that lie close to the Brittany coast, our intended route to La Rochelle would see us calling others soon. We enjoyed a lovely sail with all three sails in a F4 and sunshine. Arriving late to pick up a mooring outside the harbour and leaving early next day.

Hopefully we will return later in the summer.

Our passage from Belle Ile to Ile de Yeu was tedious, on a grey day with no wind the whole 60 miles was motored. But we were 60 miles closer to La Rochelle. Rain postponed sailing for a day then we left for Les Sables d'Olonne. A quick overnight stop and a refuel saw us on our way at 11am next morning.

Hailing Port: Portsmouth, England

About:
We took on Taransay Mhor several years ago as a project and refitted her. Eventually Taransay was as ready as any boat ever can be and it was time we committed to sailing more. During 2016 work will become a priority for both of us and that means the sailing will have to wait a while. [...]
Extra: Taransay is an island on the wild atlantic side of the Outer Hebrides, found off the west coast of Scotland. In the Celtic language, the attachment of the word 'mhor' to a name was often used to indicate that a person or place was considered great or honoured.

During June and July 2011 a mixed bag of sun, wind, fog and rain followed us, cruising from Portsmouth via St Vaast to the Golfe de Morbihan and back.
