Boisterous Passage from San Carlos to Santa Rosalia
05 October 2011 | Santa Rosalia
Taya
We had to leave San Carlos, no later than October 6th, to meet up with Debbie and Dave of s/v Wave Sweeper. They were in Santa Rosalia only until the 7th. They had all the stuff we had purchased in the US and had shipped in California. Ed Quesada of s/v Serena brought it down and had left it with Debbie & Dave in late September.
The forecast called for winds of 10 to 15 kts from West by South West (right on the nose) and waves of 4 feet at 3 seconds. We knew we were in for a long day.
As soon as we got out of the bay of San Carlos in the open waters of the Sea of Cortez, the winds picked up and were from 18 to 24 kts. The waves were 6 to 8 feet with some at 10. We also knew that the weather on the mainland side is usually worst than the Baja side.
We left San Carlos at 06:15 and arrived in Santa Rosalia at 18:15. It took us 12 hours to make the 75 miles crossing to Santa Rosalia, and Taya was totally pickled in salt from the constant spray, as we were pounding into the waves.
Upon arrival, we tied up to the dock, had a quick dinner and hit our bed completely wiped out. We slept very well that night.
