In the January '08 issue of Blue Water Sailing magazine I reported on some of the position tracking schemes cruisers can use to let friends and family back home know where in the world they are. One of the approaches I mentioned is the one you're viewing right now - SailBlogs.
What I couldn't tell you then - but can now - is that the folks at OCENS have teamed up with SailBlogs to enable blog-posting on their site using OCENS Mail. When I heard about this, I made it a point to make the OCENS booth over at Strictly Sail one of my first stops during the Miami Boat Show last week. Jeff Thomassen from OCENS gave me a quick tour, and I was so impressed I couldn't wait to try it out for myself. So here I am!
(In the interest of full disclosure, I must note that I am an OCENS dealer. However, the thoughts and opinions I'm expressing here are entirely my own).
I've explored other cruising website/position-tracking options for clients in the past, but I have to say that the folks at OCENS/SailBlogs have absolutely nailed this thing pat. You get all the advantages of SailBlogs - an ongoing cruising diary complete with photos, position-plots and everything else - coupled with an extremely efficient way to upload your posts and maintain your site via OCENS Mail. The setup is extremely intuitive and easy to use - so easy, in fact, that even an old guy like me was able to get up and running with an initial "test" post in all of about five minutes! In short, the "dynamic duo" of OCENS Mail and SailBlogs have my endorsement.
Moving forward, I hope to use this little space to bring you some occasional musings on marine electronics and technology, particularly more "things that work". Send me an Email if you have an idea for something you'd like to discuss. Fair Winds! -Tim
