Meeting local people in a new area is one of the benefits of traveling. Ted's academic training is in economics, so he is always fascinated with culture, history, people and the economy in communities. I am not far behind in that respect but I am not as much into the mechanics of things, such as buildings, cars and rusty pipes as he is. For example, several times we made special trips down to the waterfront to see the WWII liberty ship that has been converted into a fish processing plant. He was amazed how the ship was totally grounded with the earth.
We missed the Baranov and the Alutiiq Museums but we did stop at the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge Center. They have a great display of regional flora and fauna including stuffed versions of the various birds and animals. They also have a collection of wood carvings depicting Kodiak bears. Time there was well spent.
