End of the day miles: 52

Miles since Mexico: 25,999

Weather: Sunny and warm

Wind: SE and SW wind, 0 to 8 knots

Boat speed: 5 knots. We used the mainsail with motor.

I was on watch most of the day while Ted installed a new macerator that we had on the boat for a few years. The macerators are used when we are at sea to empty our black tanks. We haven't had to do that in Asia because we did not have to use the holding tanks. Canada and United States have different rules.

Coming into the Nanaimo harbor was like going into a circus but not in the negative sense. It seemed that everything was going on at the same time. We dodged two sizable ferries as they zoomed passed. Numerous sail and motor boats were coming and going. As if that was not busy enough, a float plane was coming straight towards us but at the last second veered off and landed right beside us. Then it turned around and taxied in right behind us - very noisy. Luckily it pulled into the float plane dock and did not follow us all the way to our marina! As we motored slowly down the channel we passed wall to wall marinas on the starboard side. Most boats in the marinas were pleasure craft not fishing boats like in the other marinas we had been using on this trip. Finally we found the Royal Nanaimo Yacht Club. There was no slip fee and we only had to pay $5 to cover power because they have a reciprocal agreement with our own club, the Shelton Yacht Club.

The main reason for visiting Nanaimo was to visit Charles and Sholey whom Ted first met in the Solomon Islands twenty-six years ago while they were residents there. It was fascinating to hear their reminiscing and catching up. Charles and Sholey came aboard "Shuang Yu" for dinner and then we went over to see their beautiful home which Charles designed. Charles is an architect and incorporated many special features into the home which has a stunning lake view. It was a meaningful and fun visit. We even stopped at their daughter, Anisa's, house who Ted knew when she was seven or eight years old. Now she is a grown lady with a family of twin boys and a husband. It is amazing how time flies and genuine friends will always be true no matter how long since the last contact.
