When we pulled into the harbor in Heigun, the water level was only 5.2 feet and our draft is about 5.5 feet! That was scary. Apparently we came in when the tide was at its lowest. We did not feel the rudder or the keel dragging on the bottom as we moved the boat closer to the quay so we let out our breath in sigh of relief. People told us that the Fishermen's Association (government) is scheduled to dredge the harbor this year so it will be deeper.
This is our second time on the island. The older blog post about Heigun was 8/26/2015. The reason for this stop was to see our friends, Ziggy and his three children and Jun (retired school teacher), his wife and daughter. Heigun is a small island and the people so genuine that we had to stop and say "Good Day" even though it was a risk going into the harbor. I think the children really appreciated our visit.
Ziggy had a barbecue party for us at his house with Jun and his family and the school teacher. There are only three students in the school, Ziggy's two children and Jun's daughter. Ziggy's older daughter goes to high school at a nearby bigger island, an hour's ferry ride each way. She has to take the six o'clock ferry in the morning and come back around six o'clock in the evening, a long day for a teenager. Anyway, life is very isolated for these people so they welcome visitors.
Next day, Ziggy and his two young children had lunch onboard "Shuang Yu". Jun came by with homegrown onions, and gratefruits and sweet potato chips produced in Heigun. A very warm farewell from them and we were on our way.
