Heartbreaking, but Doing OK

02 October 2009 | Neiafu, Kingdom of Tonga
Joan
We are doing OK. This has definitely been a difficult and heartbreaking few days. Its hard to get a handle on it all as we learn more. Vavau received very little damage. The outer islands protected Vavau itself. Some of the cruisers anchored out there in the outlying areas had some scary stories, but very little damage. One private wharf floated away. The big damage occurred in the small northern Tonga Island Nuie Toputapu, an entire village is no longer there. Cruisers are helping with the relief effort. A ferry sank just a couple of months ago (about 100 lives lost) and the island has been cut off from receiving supplies. A French Frigate is arriving tomorrow here in Neiafu, and we are all gathering things to send on it along with a few cruising boats heading up to help. We don't have a water maker, and are slow and small so just able to help by unloading most of our food along with all the Mexican blankets, towels, clothing and everything else that we can spare as the villagers have absolutely nothing. American Samoa and Western Samoa....the southern portions also got hit bad. We lost a friend on a boat in Pago Pago and are still waiting to hear from our Samoan friends with the traditional canoe...which is now broken in two. Several cruising boats were seriously damaged. We are all just plain stunned, but carrying on with communications and relief assistance where we can help. Thank God for the SSB!!! Another quake hit Tonga this afternoon...actually between here and Samoa, was a 6.4 and no tsunami was generated. Every new quake and siren has us all on edge both cruisers and local folks. As time goes by, we will all get back into our routines. We will cry for those who lost friends and loved ones, and we will help those in need...cruisers are an amazing group! We have become so attached to the communities that we have visited so this has hit all the cruisers very hard. We are also grieving for a cruising friend swept out to sea in Pago Pago. As we get news and it comes over the radio, it is truly heart wrenching. We will be traveling south to Nuku Alofa Monday, weather permitting and visiting with my friend Bria in the Peace Corps...bringing school supplies for them in Aue. We will then be looking for a weather window to New Zealand.

Vessel Make/Model: Hans Christian 41
Hailing Port: Alaska
Crew: Joan & Chuck
About:
Joan once again, failed to complete the program to quit sailing. She tried to be a landlubber. It lasted for only 6 years. Chuck, the ever-patient spouse quietly enjoys the adventure. SHHH....he's still a closet sailor......hasn't come out yet... [...]
Extra: There are only two unbendable rules on this vessel: 1. We can change our mind. 2. We can change direction. Everything else is flexible.

This smallest of nations has people with big hearts. Niue is unique in its beautiful caves and chasms. Lush jungles and Humpback whales add to this amazing place.
