Settling In

For the first time since 2007 we have an address, a phone number and even a local bank account. I guess we are getting down right civilized. We are settling in quite nicely for cyclone season. My job has started and I am getting used to having full time work. The pay is mostly in the satisfaction of working with young people. The children here are amazing. So eager to learn and respectful of elders. It's a mere stateside teacher's fantasy. All the people here are so friendly and welcoming. It is an easy place to arrive, and will be a very sad day indeed to leave. The easterly tradewinds blow enough to keep our batteries charged and the boat cool. It also rains frequently making it easy to catch enough rain for our daily needs. It also keeps everything so green and cooled off. at 07 degrees north latitude, we need all the cooling affects we can get. We ventured to the end of the road. It was surprising to find it 32 miles away ending in a lovely beach. the other end of the road alas, is only 5 miles out. The reef system sure makes the shoreline lovely shades to green and blue. The Marshalese people have lovely groves of palm trees from which copra is harvested. There are a few local gardens, but not enough produce to supply the local population. Like most Pacific Islands, chickens hanging out in the yards and roadsides are a common sight along with the occasional pig and dog.
