Day 19

28 June 2014
Lolo
Saturday, 28 June, 900 boat-time. 40 deg 43 min north, 175 deg 27 min west, steering 042 degrees true. About 900 miles to Dutch Harbor, 1300 to Kodiak. Not sure where we'll go yet. We've been remiss with our blog updates, apologies. All has been fine on board, albeit a bit slow at times. Several days ago we crossed a front that ushered us into the North Pacific. Since then the air temperature's been in the 50s and the sea temp's been steadily decreasing and now sits at 54 degrees Fahrenheit, and the sea has gone from a deep blue to a greenish- grey. I am trying to make bread today, but I can't get it to rise because it's too cold. It's clear now that I've missed the cold during our year in the tropics. Every time I come off watch and curl up under the down comforter and wedge the pillows around me, I feel a big grin spread across my face. Kiri is still learning how to cope with the change in temperature. She has yet to venture under the covers, but she now sleeps curled up in a ball right next to us, unlike her previous full body stretch on the head floor, which provided maximum air flow. She also appears to fluff her coat out I think to warm herself up which gives her a slightly grumpy air. Currently we are almost close hauled, sailing northeast in about 15 knots of easterly breeze. Feels nice to be headed in the right direction! We will soon feel the effects of a low approaching us. We hope to make good tracks in the accompanying strong southerly breeze. It will surely be more boisterous so for now I am enjoying the current leisurely conditions. I've got a big batch of corn chowder made and I guess maybe I'll make some flat bread since the dough isn't rising ... good enough and a I daresay better than hard tack!
