Uh-oh! Why's Glen at a UPS Store?!!

We sure wish the answer was that we were sending lots of fun souvenirs to all of you, but unfortunately, that isn't the case! He is sending our HAM/SSB radio back to Washington State for more repairs - ugh!!! We had mailed it originally from Moloka'i, it was repaired, and the company sent it to Pete to hand deliver to us when he got here last week. All went well until we tried to reinstall it. When he took it out, Glen was very careful to draw a schematic of the wiring (ten different colors that do ten different things!), so it seemed pretty easy as he started reconnecting them. He had them all wired up, plugged it all in, but the radio wouldn't come on. Oops! What could have gone wrong? Oh, now he sees... the wiring terminal is upside down. Double oops! The wires all come back off and are reconnected in their right spots. The radio comes on - yea!!! Oh, what's that? It comes on, but doesn't work? That can't be a good thing! Of course it's the weekend, so the company isn't open for a trouble shooting call, but first thing Monday morning, the call is made. The technician is out at a seminar all day. Ugh!!! Thankfully, he does check his messages before calling it a day, so he calls on Monday afternoon and suspicions are confirmed. By plugging the wires in backwards to begin with, something inside must have gotten "fried!" Definitely not a good thing! What is good is that Terry, the technician at SGC, says if we can get it to him right away, he will try his best to get it fixed and back to us for our planned May 8th departure. So, we start investigating the quickest way to get the radio back to the mainland and find there is a UPS Store in Lihue and that if we can get it to them within the next hour and a half, it can make the Monday night flight. Yea!!! It made it, and is now in the hands of Terry. This darn radio now has more miles under its belt than we do!!!
Now, you might be wondering... how are we able to get to a UPS store in Lihue when we are on our boat in Nawiliwili Harbor? Well, we have been so lucky as to have a car for the last several days. Jacqueline, Glen's sister in law, has been such a sweetie to lend us her car for a while. She is now riding her bike to her shop, Jacqueline's on Kaua'i, every day so that we can do more sight seeing and start provisioning for the upcoming crossing. We so appreciate her generosity. It has been nice getting to know her better and check out all the great things she has in her shop. She makes Aloha shirts, kids outfits, and will custom tailor anything you might desire. She stays pretty busy at her sewing tables most of the day.
Pete came in last Wednesday and we have been taking him to see all the "hot spots" on the island. He has graciously been the driver, since we don't have car insurance, so I should say he has been taking us! We went back to the Waimea Canyon, but this time went all the way to the end of the road. The views from the lookouts along the way are absolutely breathtaking. It is easy to see why it is called "The Grand Canyon" of Hawaii. The last lookout, Kalalau, gave a view of the Napali Coastline - absolutely gorgeous! On another day, we drove in the opposite direction and re-explored both the Princeville and Hanalei areas. We have now been to the end of all the main roads on the island except one. We hope to do that one, a road that skirts the Wilua River today or tomorrow, weather permitting. We have been as far as 'Opaeka'a Falls, but hear the drive further up is beautiful, as well.
The weather hasn't been so great lately - lots of rain and strong winds. It's also been a bit chilly! I finally pulled a pair of jeans out - hadn't had them on since New Zealand. This certainly isn't what we expected for Hawaiian weather... maybe we should go back to Waikiki!
I've made Glen promise he will do the next blog entry, so if you don't hear from us in a while, that's why!!! Maybe let him know you'd like to hear from him - a little extra pressure never hurts! :)
