The Perfect Evening Under Sail!
27 May 2010 | 408 Miles Away!
Sally
Boy, last night was one of those evenings when you fall back in love with sailing. We had a nice broad reach pushing us very comfortably at 6 knots (with no rocking and rolling!), the seas were calm, and the old man on the moon was playing peek-a- boo with us from behind big, puffy clouds - all the while drenching the sea with enough glow to make every ripple twinkle like a Tiffany's bauble. It has been a while since we truly felt the love of being out on the blue and we welcomed the reminder. It's still way too chilly for us spoiled tropic brats, but it made it nice to cuddle in the cockpit, clad in sweats, uggs, and knit hats. Neither of us wanted to give in to be the one to go down below to sleep first - it was just way too pretty, so we both sat up, cuddled, and just enjoyed.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. I finally succumbed to the droopy eye syndrome first and headed down below for a dose of the cure, and Glen sat up for a few hours more - drinking in the beauty. For some unknown reason, our radar, which has worked perfectly the entire trip, has now decided to go on vacation. That means our night time watches have to be a little more vigilant. We have seen only two ships the entire crossing, but as we get closer to the coast, we don't want to take a chance of getting too close to one. By the time Glen woke be up for my turn on watch, our lovely broad reach had turn into running again with increased seas and rain. Back to rocking and rolling!
At our noontime login on the chart plotter, we found we had covered another 118 miles. It is showing our way point of Oceanside Harbor to be a mere 408 miles more - holy cow, we are getting close! It's still looking like Monday will be the magic day. We'll turn our cellphones back on Sunday and keep them close so we can hear the second we get coverage. We are both so excited!!!! :)
