Reversal of Roles!

The Monday morning after our party, the alarm clock rang at 5:30 AM! Yikes!!! There aren't too many reasons we would purposely get up at such an hour, but spending a day in my niece's classroom before her school year ended was one of the few. What a great experience! Jennifer is a natural born teacher, and I am sooo proud of her. She used to come and work in my classroom all the time during her summer vacations and I am not sure how I would have survived many a first day of school without her. Now, she has a class of her own and I got to be the helper! It was pajama day and make Father's day gifts and cards day - what fun and what a great way for me to get back into teacher mode. Sadly I missed Mrs. Miller's first year teaching, but I am so glad I got a chance to meet her second class. She has been teaching first grade, and will be in Kindergarten next year - lucky girl!

I still don't know what grade or school I will be at next year. The "dreams" have already begun that it is the first day of school and I have no clue what I am teaching and haven't even put up bulletin boards yet. Ugh! I am hoping my school year starts before Jenn's so maybe I can talk her into coming down! :)

My old school, North Broadway, had its end of the year staff party on Friday and it was so great to see my old friends. A school staff really does become like family and it is very sad I will no longer officially be a "Bronco." I knew this was one of the risks I was taking when we left, but it is still very hard. I hope I find out where I'll be going soon - maybe it will help.

We stopped by the storage room we had rented and had a bit of a hard time getting in. Glen had to crawl up under the door and push several boxes of my classroom stuff away from the door - apparently there were some earthquakes while we were gone! Anyhow, we got the door opened and just started laughing. The whole front half of the room is full of my "teacher stuff" so there was no way we could even see what we left behind of our personal stuff. How did we deal with this dilemma? The only rational way... we slid the door back down and walked away! We're still on island time!

Tied up to "the wall" in Radio Bay - you drop anchor and back in to tie up to the wall. We had a few issues in heavy weather with getting a little too close... yikes!

A very leaky Dorothy Marie sitting at anchorage in the Fanning Island lagoon. It was either sweltering hot, or pouring down rain (and we were once again all alone)!

Alone again!!! Anchored at Christmas Island. The water was beautiful - you can see the different hues of blue showing reef, sand, then deeper water (from shore looking out to the boat). In the background in a few of the local fishermen that spent sunup to sundown fishing. They had to paddle, then surf their outriggers through the waves to get back to shore.

At anchor just outside the floating "Q" dock in Opua. We left the boat on a mooring ball there in Feb. when we land yachted, then were on anchor for most of March, two weeks of April, two weeks in May (we left New Zealand on the 13th).

It was nice to get back out into "cruising mode" after being on a mooring ball for so long in Opua. This is in the anchorage at Moturua Island - Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

The Dorothy Marie at anchor in Whale Bay - The Bay of Islands. We went out for a 3 week cruise of the Bay and up to Whangaroa and the Cavalli Islands. We think many parts of New Zealand look a lot like the Pacific Northwest - lots of beautiful pines and ferns.

Opua Marina, New Zealand
After 11 months "on the hook," it felt a little strange to be tied up, but we quickly readjusted to life with conveniences! Our first plan was to spend one week in the marina. That quickly changed to two, which ended up being six! We finally left on December 27th. We were in slip B-24.

We had little wind most of the trip from Tonga to New Zealand - this particular day, we had just enough to fill the "Sally Sail!"
