Yelapa
18 January 2010
We left the anchorage after Andanzas and friends left. Hope to catch up to them sooner than later. We had a great sail to Yelapa and the cove is really cool. It's one of the only ones we've seen just covered in palm trees. It's very rugged here. Linda told us about the waterfall hikes here.....sounds cool.
We pulled in closer and kept being approached by pangas to buy mooring for the night but we kindly refused and kept searching for somewhere to anchor. Not much anchorage space left here unless you have enough chain/rode for 70 ft. It's taken up by moorings for pangas and such. But we persevered after several go rounds and dropped in 30ish feet. By the time we set the anchor, we were really close to shore and in the high teens.
The water here was fabulous and since we were so close to shore (after check for rocks around the boat) we swam ashore and walked the beach. Really wish we could go for a hike but it's not a good idea with us so close to shore.
We watched a hawk swoop down on a fisherman's bait on a line. We thought at first that the hawk was tethered (like a pet or something) but it was just going after easy fish!
Jim swam a stern anchor out to try to keep us from swinging toward the rocks. After a while we pulled on the line and it came up! Darn......tried to snorkel and find it but we lost the light as the sun went behind the hills. There goes our first anchor! Dang it! So Jim swam our other one out but it must have fallen down the shelf and must not have hit bottom because it didn't seem to hold us all that well. Not an easy sleeping night but we made it and left for points south.
