Windmills! (oh excuse me wind turbines!)

09 September 2010
Well here is our latest local attraction. 450' wind turbines! We can see these things from our place and the cranes working on them. We don't even need our telescope to spy on them!

We got lucky and went to check out the progress and got to see the blades being raised and put on the base. These suckers are huge! I think someone said each blade is over 100 ft. We've seen them go by on semi truck beds......a very strange sight indeed!

They've been moving quick on these finally. We've had umpteen gravel, dump, hauling trucks go by each day going to the work sight. They are supposed to complete 30 some turbines by February and have bases of at least a dozen started and only 3 or 4 complete with the blades on.

I haven't read all the reports or news stories on this project but here is the local gossip on these suckers: 1) all the power is for NYC and Jersey 2) the company building them is Chinese 3) the landowners who have some on their land gets $500 per turbine per month 4) they are supposed to be so quiet that you won't hear them when you stand next to them.....wonder what's true?

To give you perspective, we are parked on the opposite side of the road and the guy in the field is probably 100 ft from us and he's probably 300 feet + (I'm so not good without a tape measure) away from the windmill. Are these suckers huge or what?
