Living the Dream
Ensenada Julio Villa

Another short jaunt about 8 miles north. This is a very small cove, just enough room for one boat maybe two. We went ashore and went for a hike along the cliffs north of the cove. What a view! Then we went down to the other end of the cove until we were blocked in by rocks. This is a really popular spot with locals, so unfortunately there's lots of trash.

Locals did pull up and set up camp on the beach while we were here. They started drinking about 10 and about 1 they were setting off large rockets that exploded like a bomb! Yep, no guns in Mexico but they can get all the rockets and fireworks they want!

Caleta Seri Muerto

Yes we are cruising. No we're not going very far, very fast! This trip was just a couple miles north of the last stop. This is supposed to be part of an ecological preserve (according to our old cruising guides) but we didn't even see a sign so we went ashore and played around for a bit.

Lots of big shells here but most are broken. There's always debris on the beach from storms and such. I told Jim that we should just start collecting all the diving/snorkel fins we find.....we might get a matching pair eventually to use for swaps & trades! Wouldn't that be funny?

On the way back out of the cove we came across a very round jelly fish. It looked like a ball with lots of shiny speckles on it just floating in the water. Yikes that's right.....have to be really careful up here in the sea for jelly fish and sting rays. Have trouble remembering that!

The picture is one of the rocks in the bay. Doesn't it look familiar? Hint: one of them sea mammals!

San Pedro & Caleta Amarga
01/18/2011

We took a short jump from San Carlos to San Pedro (about 17 miles north). Another pretty anchorage to add to our list. We got lots of shore time here. You would not believe the piles of seashells here from people harvesting all the mollusks. You could probably build a house from all of them. Most of the piles we've seen here are pink murex, a very pretty shell when it's not all bleached out from the sun. I'm holding a shell (not a pink murex) that I found among one of the piles. So no it doesn't go into my shell collection cuz I didn't find it exactly....well you know what I mean!

The next day we hiked over to the next cove - Amarga. A very nice walk through a typical desert landscape. At one point you can see San Pedro & Amarga at the same time. Pretty cool!

Birthday Girl
01/16/2011

We've finally decided after a week in San Carlos, with almost no shore time, and with favorably decreasing winds, it's time to vahmoose! After much debate, Jim said that birthday girl (in case you can't figure out who that is, that'd be moi) can decide our course. Soooooo, we are heading north on the mainland side to a few of the smaller anchorages here for about 30 miles and then we'll cross to the Santa Rosalia area (about 70ish miles away).

We went into town again for showers (oh yeah baby) and to have a drink at the Marina Cantina with Nancy & Greg from Festima Lente. We hung out and watched a football game. Of course doing the blog a bit!

As soon as we can get internet again, we'll contact everyone again. Thanks to all our friends who leave us such great comments. We do enjoy them. Everyone stay safe, healthy & happy!

Ok so the pic is not a pic of the birthday girl on her birthday, but of the pharaoh like face at the entrance to Bahia San Carlos. Enjoy!

Happy, Happy Birthday Month Birthday Girl!! Enjoy the small anchorages and do what I do - celebrate all month :)
Crash & rescue, rescue & rescue
01/15/2011

A business day today in Bahia San Carlos. We finally got off the boat this morning before the winds picked up (high teens to high 20s) and picked up something things at the store. Talked to a few boaters who were over here from Guaymas.

We then took a quick beach stop across the bay. Checked out lots of shells, the scenery, spiny sea urchins, cool looking star fish and some sea slugs! The winds were blowing pretty good by the time we got back to the boat.

Not much longer after that, we heard a hail from 'Elan' a catamaran near us. They've been hit by a boat and are hailing for help! What the hell! Looks like a trimaran broke loose from its mooring and was resting broadside on the bow of Elan. A couple other dinghies came to help them and they got it off their bow and it started floating, of course, toward the Nordhaven 'Island Grace'. Well the rescue crew worked tirelessly as the trimaran did come up broadside onto the power boat and the swung it off and kept it off its side. They were able to get it anchored before it hit more boats or land. Whew!

At the same time, we hear a vessel needs assistance hail from 'Yolo", a Catalina 38 near Martini Cove. It's lost its engine, lost its dinghy & outboard (they were towing) and only had a staysail. Of course the winds are picking up. With lots of communication back and forth, they finally got help from Sharky Tow and were towed into the fuel dock.

Now don't think this was the end of the excitement! At the same time Yolo was sailing back and forth waiting for help, another boater called in a distress call for a 20' powerboat that seemed to be going in reverse near the entrance to the bay. The small powerboat did come into the channel of the bay in reverse and waited while another tow came to get them as Yolo was being towed in. Wow what a day at sea!

Love our anchor! We haven't moved in a week of afternoon NW blows. Thank you very much Delta!

YAY for Delta! Ugh on all the boat dragging drama. We had a tour of "Elan" before we bought "Meerkat". He did an incredible finish job on that cat - it's beautiful! Hopefully it was NOT damaged. Also, if you run into them again, she does wonderful & beautiful beading. :) Miss YA!
Stay away!

We had our first of the season heart attack as we entered the bay near San Carlos. I'm checking out the fishing guide and we're just hanging out in the cockpit under sail, when all of a sudden we hear something a lot bigger than us surfacing way too close to us! Scared the hell out of Jim and me! It was of course, a whale--a fin whale. It surfaced just off our port quarter. Just too damn close for us especially since it was bigger than our boat. By the time we got over the shock, Jim turns to me and says "I think this is a really good time for the camera" Ah duh! So I run down to get it and snap some pics (by this time it is a bit farther away from us [thank you Mr. Whale]). This is the best pic of all of them.

We sailed most of the way to Bahia San Carlos but the winds picked up and the time got away from us, so we started up the motor just a couple miles from the anchorage. We had the hook down & set by 5pm and pulled anchor watch for a few hours and all was well. So good to be back under way!
