Grand birthday bash for grandboys
10/01/2011

Grandson's Cole & Dylan got a grand birthday bash for their birthdays. Wish we could have been there. Sorry I'm not facebook friendly and don't have a clue how to add a facebook picture to my blog. So just imagine 2 really cute blonde baby boys and you've got it!

Freeze warning Again!
10/01/2011

Come on man! We survived the last freeze with a little bit of ice on the windshield that we had to wait for the sun to melt. Otherwise, the plants are still flowering and green. Wheewwwww! But the geese are flying already! Crap! Do they know something we don't?

So here we go again! Cover everything up (should we just give up?). Phil actually built a green house around his habanero plants cuz they're doing so good. They are 2 to 3 ft high and wide! Didn't know they got that big. And they're flowering all over the place.

The cold doesn't seem to be affecting the lawn at all.....have to mow again. It takes about 1-1/2 hours to mow our lawn right now and that's without any weedwacking or other trimming. Haven't been taking lots of pictures of the fall colors......bad girl. So here's one of my sunflowers before Hurricane Irene wiped them out.

Freeze Warning!
09/15/2011

Are you freaking kidding me? A freeze warning in September! Well my dad was right, he said an early frost this year (those old farmers never lose their weather skills). So we covered the garden with every piece of plastic and tarp we had in the barn. That way we can still keep green/yellow beans and peppers going.

On the brighter side is broccoli flowers. I might just grow broccoli for flowers next year since I never seem to be able to pick them before they flower! They're so pretty. The bees, butterflies and insects of all kind love them too. Keeps me (the bug girl) happy!

Step 1 of Heating with Wood
09/10/2011

What this is is a big mess caused by tropical storm Lee. Excessive winds, rain and lightning brought down 3 trees on top of my dad's apartment house in Mohawk. The weather sucked so bad that the tree guys couldn't come in for 2 days and then it took 2 days to cut the trees down and off the building. My dad's tenants came out to watch the fun with us in the rain and the neighbors (god bless them) made hot dogs and hamburgers and fed everyone. After the trees were off then monkey boy brother Jeff with the help of Phil and sister Netti's beau Mic went up on the shingle roof to cover up damaged areas as best they could to keep the rain out til the roof/chimneys could be repaired. Aye, aye, aye!

So Phil spent multiple days chainsawing the wood the tree guys left for us and we stacked the wood along the property line (step 2 of heating with wood). After work everyday we stopped on our way home and picked up a load of wood to drop into a pile at our place for splitting some time later in the fall. Egads! What a pile!

Nasty, Nasty ICK!
09/07/2011

Oh crap we've got blight on our tomatoes! This is such a disgusting disease! The plants went from thriving and green with lots of tomatoes on them to black and disgusting in less than a week. I've picked more the 15 gallons of tomatoes off the plants and have been going through the ones that we've picked to throw out then ones that are turning bad from blight. (Update......actually had to throw out more than 10 gallons of rotting tomatoes and gave away a grocery sack to be used before they turned too). I just can't cook them all fast enough even though I've made 2 relishes and tomato soup. There's just too many and not enough time.....I'd have to can 24/7 to get them so I don't have to throw them out.

Can you believe that this disease has been around for ages? It's the same disease that created the great potato famine in Ireland in 1845. After seeing the destruction of everything tomato in our garden in less than one week, it's still hard to imagine what those poor people went through year after year.

I guess what gives me puffballs will bring on blight.......I think I'll take tomatoes over puffballs though.

Craving Mushrooms
09/05/2011

What the hell is that you say? These are wild giant puffballs that we found growing on the property. Kind of like a mushroom, just no stem and it's just a bit bigger! Unfortunately, I got to them to late as they were already starting to turn for sporing. Maybe next year!

Now what do I do with that mushroom craving I've got going on?
