High Tech Is Our Enemy

05 July 2017 | Pago Pago, American Samoa

What is the single greatest reason for the high cost of healthcare in the US? It is the adoption of new medical technology, and the training for it, used without regard to a cost benefit analysis in the individual instance. Doctors love high tech stuff like toys and overuse it to help cover its very high overhead. Treatment outcomes in the US remain relatively poor, except for cancer, because US patients still get far fewer doctor hours per patient than in other countries.

High Tech implementations often so routinize work that many employees are driven from such work out of boredom. The enjoyable human element is being removed from the workplace making life less enjoyable for those who remain. High tech, if it doesn't displace workers, can really make work dull and unenjoyable for those left.

And of course high tech is increasingly displacing workers with full do-it-all robotics. People in ever larger numbers are becoming unemployed and many of those have left the labor force. This will become a greater problem in the future.

High tech is strongly increasing capital's share of income and reducing labor's share, over and above the usual Piketty effect, and significantly increasing both income inequality and wealth inequality. These inequalities 1)operate to injure the economy and make it less efficient, 2) compromise on social justice and impoverish many more, and 3) concentrate wealth to corrupt our political process to a much greater extent.

High tech development is concentrated in a very small portion of the labor force which is financed by venture capitalists and Wall Street so the financial gains from high tech are largely limited to those relatively small sectors.

High tech in most instances is like an externality which socializes adjustment costs and privatizes the gains from its development. Other business are displaced or destroyed by newer technology also without compensation. Dislocations are disregarded.

High tech is truly no friend of ours.

About:
Kimball Corson: I am a 75 year old solo sailor, by choice. However, I did take on a personable, but high maintenance female kitten, now a full grown cat, named KiKiPoo when she is sweet, or KatKatPo after she has just killed something like a bird or bat. [...]
Extra:
Although I was a lawyer and practiced law with good success for thirty years, creating significant new law, I never really believed in the law, the politics of law or in the over reaching self-interest of most lawyers I met. Too much exposure to Nietzsche and other good and seriously thoughtful [...]
