American Pork - The Obesity Problem

The Skinny on American Obesity

Veritable oinkers are we. About 35% of American adults are obese that is have a BMI or body mass index of over 30. That is about 30 % overweight or, for a woman who is 5'4" tall, weighing more than 175 or more than 188 for one 5' 9." But that is not the worse of it. Obese is being seriously overweight, not just overweight.

But it gets even worse yet. Fifty-four percent of American adults have abdominal obesity, that is, for women having a waist line of over 35" or, for men, over 40 inches. Abdominal obesity has a much higher correlation than general obesity with heart disease, diabetes and the illnesses associated with obesity. The big bellied, apple shaped figure is a major health risk, but nonetheless a major part of the American landscape. Abdominal obesity is on the rise among Americans; going from 46% of all American adults in 1999-2000 up to 54 % now. Oink Oink.

As for the "beer bellies," women have a bigger problem than men. By 2011-12, the last year studied, 44 percent of men suffered from abdominal obesity, up from 37 percent. The trend was more pronounced among women: By 2011-12, about two-thirds of all women were affected, up from just over half in 1999-2000.

Excessive eating, sedentary life styles and a lack of exercise are particularly to blame and due to the choices we make about how we spend our time. We kid ourselves a lot about these things.

About:
Kimball Corson: I am a 75 year old solo sailor, by choice. However, I did take on a personable, but high maintenance female kitten, now a full grown cat, named KiKiPoo when she is sweet, or KatKatPo after she has just killed something like a bird or bat. [...]
Extra:
Although I was a lawyer and practiced law with good success for thirty years, creating significant new law, I never really believed in the law, the politics of law or in the over reaching self-interest of most lawyers I met. Too much exposure to Nietzsche and other good and seriously thoughtful [...]
