Recurring Motifs in Korean Movies

Lying to protect others and friends from emotional hurt is a major motif. So is self sacrifice for the same end. There is much of both. On the lying, "oh, it's nothing," is the stock response to a probing query. These rise to themes in Korean movies. Tight social and emotional integration is sought and revered. Head bows (to 35 degrees from the waist, the proper amount) are the form of greeting. Nods, if rushed.

Carrying a loved one or friend piggy back when injured or tired is a common motif. The heroine in one movie died of terminal leukemia while being told a story and carried piggy back during her last day by her lover and new husband. Men loan women their coats a lot too when it is chilly. People fall in love riding bicycles.

Lovers, spurned especially and male in-laws, yell a lot. Women say they are sorry very often. Men do so only slightly less. Tears are de riguer. Women cry copiously and often. Men occasionally. Male lovers can be real mopey and stare at the floor a lot when facing a love dilemma. Rejected would-be lovers are like hover craft. They lurk and pout much.

The feelings of true love projected are well crafted cinemagraphically. Engagement rings are tossed around like pebbles when love goes south with no regard to value.

It is as common for men to grab women by their wrists (usually the left one) and jerk them well aside to talk to them, as it is for women to remain where they are moved to after they are released, until the conservation is over.

Shoes are removed on entering a house or apartment and slippers are worn. Noodles in soup is a very common dish. The women are not buxom or curvaceous. Taller and slender is the prototype. Also, the women run well. Faces are turn aside when drinking alcohol in the presence of a senior or person who is elder or of higher station.

When suitors hug and kiss women, even those the women marginally like, women's arms stay by their sides. If they really like the guy, they go partially around his waist in a limp fashion. It they love the guy to pieces, arms go up around his neck. Kissing is never French kissing, but sort of a puckered lips press, regardless of how well the woman likes/loves the man. This is how feminine modesty works.

Body language matters, but the spoken language does too and it is is used in a calculatedly articulate fashion, even in emotional scenes when spoken rapidly. Koreans prize intelligence and education and both are sub motifs in movies. Indeed, Koreans invented the world's first movable metal type printing system in 1234, which preceded the Gutenberg Bible of Germany by two centuries. The Korean language is what is called an isolate. It is unique to itself and not at all like Chinese or Japanese or any other language in the area or elsewhere.

Seoul has more PhD's per capita than any other city in the world. The gap between north and south Korea grows daily. There is a heartfelt wish for reunification that leaks into Korean cinema.

About:
Kimball Corson: I am a 75 year old solo sailor, by choice. However, I did take on a personable, but high maintenance female kitten, now a full grown cat, named KiKiPoo when she is sweet, or KatKatPo after she has just killed something like a bird or bat. [...]
Extra:
Although I was a lawyer and practiced law with good success for thirty years, creating significant new law, I never really believed in the law, the politics of law or in the over reaching self-interest of most lawyers I met. Too much exposure to Nietzsche and other good and seriously thoughtful [...]
