Sea of Cortez - Here we Come!
Phoebe - Sunny & Hot
05/20/2012, Mazatlan, Mexico

Hola! Finally heading north. We had still been having issues with our main fuel tank with fuel delivery but we finally resolved the issue at our stopover in a small anchorage called Chacala. We stayed two nights and headed out very early Saturday morning and arrived in Mazatlan around 9:30 am Sunday morning. Had an uneventful trip (was a bit lumpy so did not sleep well) and the sky was beautiful. Hoping to enjoy a good long nap and a few days in Mazatlan before we cross over the the Baja Coast which will be about 220 miles. Will post more later, Cheers!!!! This is a pic of our boat, behind the first boat (Nirvana-who we have been doing some buddy boating with), in the anchorage at Chacala.

Hi all: We are finally ready to go. We are going to head north towards San Carlos today. Richard & Mary Ann - we are so sorry we could not stop in La Cruz but we just feel now that we can go we need to go!!! Hope you understand. Hope to see you when we get back in the fall. We will spend a few weeks enjoying the islands in the sea before we leave the boat for cooler temps at home for the summer. Really looking forward to seeing everyone. It is really hot here (at least for us). We have a few buddy boats heading up with us so will have lots of company. Take care.

Don't count your chickens before they are hatched. Well I guess I spoke too soon. I wondered why those Laughing Gulls were "laughing" on the way to the fuel dock. We polished the fuel and cleaned the tank. We figure once the gunk was removed some existing leaks surfaced. We have to cut the tank out, make it smaller, re-weld it and re-install it. Hence that will take a few days. In the meantime we will likely miss our weather window and have to wait here anyway, not sure how long. Someone reminded me today that the happiest day in a boat owner's life is the day they buy and the day they sell. Not too far wrong there, ha ha. Will keep you posted. This is a pic of an elegant tern, at least I can enjoy the birds,,,

Here is an other old saying " a bad day cruising is better than a great day at work" sorry to hear about your troubles with the gas tanks but still wishing I was out there with you. We really enjoyed hearing about your trip to Equador and the photos were amazing. Thanks so much for letting us share in your adventures. Love the new panama Reg.

We agree with Terry and Randy! Just think back to your work days! Just a little set back. At least you don't have some self important boss asking why this wasn't fixed before anyone knew it was a problem! Then have to go to 10 post mortem meetings on why it happened and how we can prevent any issues from ever occurring again!
Give me a boat with a leaky fuel tank any day!

Sorry to hear you are leaking (perhaps by now you are not). Let us know when you are up this way and we'll do dinner and cribbage.

We are sitting at the fuel dock in Barra Navidad getting our fuel polished in one tank before we fill up for the trip north. We are feeling positive about our engine and hope to enjoy a 24 hour run to Banderas Bay (Nuevo Vallarta) during a great moonlit night. Strong north winds are coming in and we want to beat them so we are leaving today around Noon. It has been a long 3 months except for our great trips to Ecuador and inland Mexico). While we were out putting final hours on the engine we ran into a large pod of both spotted dolphins and bottle nose dolphins. They gave us a great show, leaping and looking back to see if we were watching. We will be working on figuring out how to get home this summer and hope to see as many family and friends as we can. Hope everyone is well and looking forward to the warmer weather and for those sailors out there Launch!!!!

Just a quick update. We now have an engine and we have moved out into the lagoon. Unfortunately we are having some electrical/charging issues,,,,,grrrrr.

Hopefully that will be resolved soon so we can get busy putting our 50 hours on (tough to do on a sailboat and still stay in the area) so that we can get the engine re-checked and the oil changed.

Then we head north, got to get out of here before hurricane season starts in June!!!!

Hope everyone is enjoying spring back home!!!

Crab Feast & Alia Goes Home
Phoebe
04/25/2012, Guayaquil, Ecuador

We arrived back in Guayaquil on Saturday afternoon. Alfredo's family were preparing a specialty of Guayaquil - Crabs harvested from the Mangroves near the city.

This is quite a complicated process. Alfredo's brother Hugo was in charge of preparing the crabs. Alfredo's Mom, Eugenia prepared the broth that they would be cooked in. Herbs, veggies and plantains are used to flavor the broth. We watched the whole process from sink to table. The next challenge was to eat them. Everyone had a grand time cracking and crunching. Eugenia was kind enough to prepare a crab salad for us in case we were not able to master the technique which was very thoughtful.

Alfredo's family were very generous and wonderful hosts during our stay in Ecuador. The family then provided us with gifts to remember our stay. Thank you so much Alfredo, Emma and Family, Alfredo Sr, Eugenia, Andrea, Denise, Hugo and Paulina.

Alas it was time for Alia to fly back home and for us to spend some time with Emma and Alfredo before flying back to Mexico ourselves. It was quite an adventure. We hope you enjoyed our pics and blogs stories of our travels.
