A change in the weather emptied out Soller harbor's anchorage. Strong northerly winds were forecast which would make for big swells to enter the harbor. An uncomfortable situation none of us wanted to experience so some went west and around to Palma while others of us went east and around to the large bay off of Pollencia. Here we could hide behind the rocky hills from the swell but the wind barrels down on the anchorage in gusts that will water your eyes. After a pleasant 33 mile sail yesterday we thought we were well set with two anchors out in tandem formation. At 0330 we were up wondering what had hit us wind wise to find that we had in fact dragged them a short way nearly on top of another boat. So it was a typical middle of the night anchor drill to get them reset and then anchor watch started and carried on through the day. ..30+ knots with gusts to 45 knots for a while. During that time the big schooner in the photo, shown lying 90 degrees to the wind, dragging her anchor across the bay, was in real trouble until her anchor finally held. There were various other excitements but none involving us thankfully. So tonight we are waiting for the predicted wind shift to the NW and another blustery, semi-sleepless night.
