Threshold is headed south, a long way south.

16 years Karyn and I have been sailing Threshold in circles around the North Atlantic and the Med. This year, after a couple of zigs and zags, it will be mostly a straight line south toward the Beagle Channel.

What are we doing?

29 July 2013 | In the hanger
/hot, windy, humid, sunny

We are painting the boat. How to describe that? Let us pretend that the boat is your house, your home. How do you paint it, just the outside of it? ….if it were like Threshold, a sail boat.
You would start by moving everything you could out of your house into a storage unit. That would be the furniture, the kitchen tools, the accumulated food, all the clothes you would wear for the duration of the project, plus the yard tools, the garaged household equipment, until the storage unit is full. Then you would call for a large, mobile crane. While it was arriving you would have all the wires and pipes to the house disconnected. That would be the electricity, the phone, the Internet, the water, the gas, and the sewer. When the crane arrived you would have it pull the nearby telephone pole out of the ground and lay it across your front lawn blocking the side walk and the driveway where your car is parked, now semi-permanently. Next you would begin to remove gear, oops!, that would be structural items like skylights, window frames, front door knockers, and key pads to open the garage door. Since the house is now open to the ambient construction dust everything remaining inside must be covered with plastic. That would be the remaining, immoveable artwork, the toilets, the Corian counters in the kitchen, the book cases full of books too heavy to move, the 1970’s water bed, and of course the wide screen, 3D TV.
Now that the house is prepared for the painting-prep crew to go to work you realize that you have no place to live. So, you must rent a temporary flat which due to good planning is available at high season rates. Small problem…your car is blocked by the telephone pole. No-problem! (that is a very international phrase) There is cheap, local transportation only 5 minutes walk from your new construction site. For $1 US you are delivered by local, private mini-bus, to within two blocks of your three floor walk-up penthouse with garden terrace and it only took 45 minutes and 60 stops to get there. But, don’t get too comfortable because in 12 hours it will be another $1 US, 45 minutes, and 60 stops back to your home.
You must go back because the painting-prep crew are going to go to work.
