Threshold is headed south, a long way south.

16 years Karyn and I have been sailing Threshold in circles around the North Atlantic and the Med. This year, after a couple of zigs and zags, it will be mostly a straight line south toward the Beagle Channel.

Azores to Scotland: DAY 3

08 May 2008 | About 1000 nm SW of NW Scotland
Steve
As predicted, the winds picked up and there were some showers last night. After a beautiful afternoon of skimming along at a slight tilt to starboard Karyn served us another wonderfully hot and tasty, pasta and meat dish. Before the dishes could be washed the sun was setting and the wind became gusty so we three tied in the first reef of the mainsail. Fully tied and lashed along the boom it was ready for the rain which never really came. But, it was good that we had reduced the sail area as the wind did pipe up to near 30 knots in the darkest hours of the night. Even though it was behind us we had to roll up the jib and run with the staysail which is still set as I write this noon report. We are no longer skimming along but rather bouncing and heaving on our right ear. And, we have made good miles in the last 24 hours, 175 to be exact. We have enough wind to be going faster but this is a bumpy road now and 6-7 knots is comfortable enough to allow the remainder of our boating life to go on. By that I mean the maintaining of the boat. It is constant this support of the systems that allow us to be so far from civilized infrastructure yet enjoy most of the comforts of a land life. Today it is Ferris the Tow Generator that is requiring attention. Yesterday, for an unknown reason Ferris blew his fuse. Today, with his new fuse he was putting in the amps like a champ but the one-way diode was getting really hot. Andy is assisting in the diagnosis and reassembly but we are fearful for the regulator and unable to do anything about it as of yet. After this we must track down the fault in the AIS (Automated Information System) that allows large ships to show us where they are by a VHF transmission. This is a great safety tool and I was very upset to start seeing ships in the distance that AIS had not alerted us about. So, back to the old method of looking around. Karyn's on watch and just assured me there are none. We must have about 1000nm to go. More tomorrow.
