The Wind, and our search for the perfect amount of it is sometimes very frustrating. Yesterday as predicted our breeze slowly died and shifted around to the southwest. We nudged, and stroked, and coaxed Threshold until she was only doing two knots while rolling the wind out of the sails. Start the engine! Get the sails down! And not for over 15 hours did the wind return strong enough to sail again. We motored slowly, heading 030 degrees along our rhumb line, saving some fuel, hoping the wind would catch up with us. The best part of running the engine at night is the droning noise that puts one sound to sleep. Sailing is better. We are back to the good life now. The jib is poled out to starboard, the main is vanged down on the port side, and we are sailing on course at almost 6 knots with 12 knots of wind behind us. The seas are flat and the boat is as quiet as to be tied to the dock. These idealic conditions may last for a few hours. John, 'Our Weather Guy', has been right-on with his forecasts and this morning he says that this wind will be building all day, along with the seas. By tonight we could have 20-25 knots with 10 foot seas, both from the south. We should make some very good time during the next 24 hours. Much better than the 110 miles we made in the last 24. At the moment all is well. Karyn is making some notes and marking up the rigging with Andy's expert help. I'm writing this log. The Autopilot is steering according to the direction of the wind. Ferris is streaming aft and making about 7 amps. It must be time for something to eat, or a nap, or maybe even find a book to read. Andy has read at least four so far, Karyn at least one, but I have yet to open one up. Who has time?
