Threshold is headed south, a long way south.

16 years Karyn and I have been sailing Threshold in circles around the North Atlantic and the Med. This year, after a couple of zigs and zags, it will be mostly a straight line south toward the Beagle Channel.

Dinner out.

21 May 2008 | Loch Nevis, Knoydart Pen.
Steve
It was a fine day of sailing. With the wind out of the southeast we ran down from Tobermory to Ardemurchen Point. Once around we were now in the the Hebrides, the Inner Hebrides. The wind, cold and gusty, now on the beam provided us with more power than we needed. Before we could get a reef tied in and the jib replaced with the staysail we had hit 10+ knots. Even under the reduced sail we were making a comfortable, flat eight knots. For most of the day it was just Threshold and several fishing boats trailing their nets but later a group of four sail boats passed going the other direction. Our destination was a pub in Loch Nevis, The Old Forge. Located at the waters edge on the rugged Knoydart Peninsula the pub advertises itself as the most remote pub on the UK mainland. There are no roads into the area so you must either walk/climb over the mountains or arrive by boat. It makes for an interesting culture similar to the isolation of an island. The attraction here is the mountains and the climbing that they offer. We were the only yacht in Loch Nevis so anyone else visiting was a climber. Climbers and Sailors, there is a long history of 'muy simpatico' between the two. So, we three guys took Karyn out for dinner and a well deserved night off. "Pub food" is not always the best. The Old Forge is different. Four excellent meals were delivered by cheerful, round, black girl who appeared totally out of context to me. The room was mostly full of older, seemingly very fit people. We had just walked a couple of miles around the village which is more than we have walked in weeks. When we mentioned that we had had a very nice hike one of the gentlemen we talked with said "Oh, where did you go?" and then laughed out loud when we called it a hike. He had just returned from an 18 km. bike ride and a 7 km climb, each way. It will be fun to return to Knoydart someday and enjoy the mountains. No time now. We have to keep moving north. Important destinations are ahead. Next, the Talisker Distillery on the Isle of Skye. 8>)
