Every time we have arrived at remote high latitude destinations here in the Atlantic we have been amazed at how mild the weather is and how lush and green the land is. They are steep, rocky islands to be sure but there is also plenty of flat land and great natural harbors. For the people it is the harbors that are important because they are all fishermen. In their Viking designed small boats they go off into the far North Atlantic throughout the year to fish, one man to a boat. These fishermen provide enough exportable fish for all the people on these islands to live rather well from what we have seen so far. These people are close relatives of the Vikings and look the part. They are a very friendly, proud people. Many of them speak English but their primary language is the old Norse language that they have preserved and continue to cultivate. They can understand Norwegian, Danish, Swedish...all the Scandinavian languages where none of those people can really understand each other. It would be similar to some island in the Mediterranean still speaking Latin I believe. Interesting. We are in the small village of Tvoroyri on the most southern island of Suduroy. There is a small commercial harbor and several small fishing harbors in this fjord. The harbor master could not understand why we wanted to anchor out the first night when we could tie up on his quay for free, with free showers and toilets near his office, as well as a free laundry. This is unique in our experience of cruising for many years. I am anxious to get to the Internet to post some photos. That will happen in the next couple of days as we move up to the capital, Torshavn, where things are not free.
