Threshold is headed south, a long way south.

16 years Karyn and I have been sailing Threshold in circles around the North Atlantic and the Med. This year, after a couple of zigs and zags, it will be mostly a straight line south toward the Beagle Channel.

Rainy Day

14 July 2008 | Klaksvik, Vordoy
Klaksvik, the second largest town in Faroes with 5,000 people, is a busy working harbor. There is not a large ship yard as in Torshavn but there are a number of larger, offshore fishing boats with all the support services for them as well as a couple of fish processing plants. There are no facilities for yachts so we are tied to a 1946 wooden, gaff-rig ketch used now as a tour/training boat (ex: fishing boat) She, the Dragin (www.dragin.fo), is pristine thanks to the local owners/volunteers who manage her as part of a foundation. There were a large number of this type boat built immediately after WWII to replace the large number of boats lost to German attacks during the war as the Faroese supplied the British with fish throughout the war. We learned this over coffee and a beer aboard Threshold last evening when three of the key members of the group - a teacher, a chef, and an engineer - came aboard after several hours of after-dinner-work on Dragin. Yesterday we motored 18 miles into the wind and through the swirling currents that rip through these islands. The planning for even a short move between islands is extensive. If one were to get the planning terribly wrong or ignore doing it one could well regret it. The over falls and nasty seas that can build could be dangerous even to very large vessels. Our Irish friends had a four hour, wide-eyed event the day after they departed Torshavn. We plan to continue to be careful. My fun event was getting the tow generator repaired. I enjoy meeting the real people, working people in these villages and having something to accomplish helps do that. Before I had really finished tying up the boat Karyn was off to the ubiquitous tourist information office and back again to tell me someone was coming to see what I needed to have done. It turns out the young woman in the office had called her father, owner of the local radio maintenance shop. He shows up, sees that I need a machine shop to pull the bearings, and we depart in his truck. Around on the west side of the harbor we find a large machine shop with it own 30 ton, indoor, boat lift. The owner goes to work with an inside puller, vises, and a hydraulic press. There were a few delays while he supervised a couple of workers but he had the job done in short order. No charge! Thank you very much! A quick ride back to Threshold and Louis the radio guy was off to an overnight job on another island. Yes, thank you very much. What a country!
