It will not be possible to say all that needs to be said about the Faroes in this format. I will have to write a complete article and post it somewhere else. A few sentences would be very inadequate to try and convey how dramatic these islands are. That word, Dramatic, is the one description that keeps returning to mind. The immense, vertical, black cliffs that rise out of the blue ocean and reach up through the hill fog into the rolling, ominous clouds. The steep, green hill sides dotted with white and brown sheep above the small colorful village at the head of the fjord with its huge breakwater sheltering the pristine fishing fleet of Viking style boats. The sea and sky that are full of millions of sea birds: Northern Fulmars, Northern Gannets, Puffins, Kitty Wakes, Razor Bills, Guillemots, Eider Ducks, Arctic Skuas, Arctic Terns, Storm Petrals and more.
Then there are the special people that are quick to take you into their homes and share their unique lives with you. It is true that we met more people in these islands during our two week cruise than we have met during entire seasons of cruising in more populated places. Birgir and Olva, Pushka, Hans and Luffa, Helgi and Ninnie, the Dragin Boys: Hans and Darius, and Louis. All of you made our time in your unique culture a wonderful experience. We met many more than those mentioned and to our knowledge only one of them was not born in these islands. They have all stayed here by choice and a good choice it is. This rugged and sever environment creates a small culture that is in very many ways idyllic. Were it to be adapted by the larger, more commercial, more violent world we would all be better.
