Almost to halfway!
23 July 2012 | Pacific Ocean? Yupp.
Alyssa
Only 1160 miles to the finish, and that means only 125 miles to halfway! Yesterday was a whopping (new record) of 198 miles towards Kaneohe, and speaking of records the speed record was broken yet again by Billy at 15 knots!! We should be hitting the exact spot midmorning tomorrow. I wonder if there'll be a marker in the ocean...
It has gotten significantly warmer over the past couple of days, in fact we have put out the fishing line with the green lure because the water is over 70 degrees- thanks Vince!! I have taken to cooking meals in shorts and a running bra because the galley gets too damn hot with the stove and/or oven on! Around midday the sun comes out and everyone has to strip off layers, though it never gets exceptionally hot with the wind blowing as hard as it is. Tonight we had Mulligan's Stew (more like chili-mac) and crescent rolls for dinner while listening to Children's Hour. One boat reported a breaching whale, another reported a broken spinnaker pole, and another caught two albacore tunas! We also ad a friendly literary competition with the topic "you know you're an ocean racer if...". Ken came up with: you know you're an ocean racer if a brown paper bag means something other than lunch. For those of you who do not understand the humor, a brown paper lunch bag is used to hold toilet paper and baby wipes before they get thrown overboard- as Brad said, in a sense it is an outcome of your lunch that goes in the bag! Ewww sorry, that's gross.
That's all for now! Everybody is sleeping off dinner and trying to make up for the rough, restless nights. See y'all in 1160 miles!
