where the cliffs tumble into the sea......

Landfall Spain at Ribadero
Our first stops in Spain were Ribadeo, Viveiro and now La Coruna, all in Galicia on the North Coast.
The landscapes have been stunning and surprising, dramatic cliffs with white surf and beautiful green fields and forests (we had expected burned California looks) with a mountain background. You would expect a fair amount of rain to keep things this green, however we have been blessed with balmy sunshine and have finally tossed our fleece and long undies in a garbage bag – flip flops and shorts it is!
We enjoyed the old city of Ribadeo with its narrow streets and slow pace sidewalk café’s. Our first Spanish meal out was a fabulous fish stew that was to die for – when we did a little research of the restaurant after the fact it turned out to be the # 1 rated joint in town! Judy can always sniff out the best even with her eyes closed….
We actually had some decent sailing conditions on our 2 legs along the coast with nice reaching conditions, the fuel we filled our tanks with in England will last a long time.
In Viveiro we hung out at a couple of local bars watching Spain get beaten by Croatia in the EURO soccer championships, game was over at 11 PM, normally way past our bedtime. But we seem to have quickly adjusted to the Spanish way of sleeping in and staying up ‘till late – it is still light out at 10:30PM
Talking about tumble, I did a little (s)tumble of my own……. walking up a set of ancient stairs in Ribadeo my foot missed the top of the last step. But no worries, I quickly started running forward trying to gain my balance, faster, faster, more forward leaning, faster…..you get the picture. Eventually I did a Joe Montana body roll to the right with hardly any damage to my body other than a skinned knee, a little gravel in the palm of my hands and a good blow to my rib cage.
So breathing and moving around is a little painful at the moment!
I do better in the late afternoon with a little bit of Spanish wine in my belly, so we are planning a little inland excursion over the next couple of days to the wine region to see which brand has better pain killing properties.
