Dodecanese Islands - Spring 2017

Judy and I arrived back at Leros airport at 08:15hrs on Wed 10 May 2017. We had a three and a half hour wait at Athens for the small commuter plane to Leros. A long wait but we enjoyed the views of various islands on the one hour flight to Leros. The boatyard had arranged for a hire car to be waiting [...]

Orei to Leros, Summer 2016

Judy and I returned to Greece on 17 April 2016. Sofie and one year old Edith met up with us at Heathrow and we flew off together. We picked up a hire car at Athens airport and drove to Orei on Evia Island, crossing on the Arkitsas to Edipsos ferry.

An Island Too Far.

For the first trip of the summer, I planned a nice little cruise down the west side of the Argolic Gulf, past Cape Maleas to north west Crete and along the coast to Iraklion. We were to meet up with Kevin and Lesley there and then continue the loop back to Koilada via Thira (Santorini) and Milos in the [...]

Faro to Cadiz - June 2011

Faro to Cadiz - June/July 2011.

I returned to Faro on 19 June 2011. Judy stayed at home as Ben was coming over from Boston for a week or so as he had to give a presentation on his work at the University of Plymouth.

I had arranged with Bruce in Nave Pegos boatyard for Tobin Bronze to be lifted back into the water on the afternoon high tide next day. Because the boatyard is so far up Ria Formosa, keel boats have to lifted in or out at high tide. And even then there is only enough water for boats with a draught of over 1.75m during the period around spring tide.

The re-launch went well and I even managed to follow Bruce in his work/pilot boat down to the Faro anchorage without running aground. BUT I did have a heavy line for towing rigged up and ready just in case!

A couple of days later, old friend Tim H. arrived in Faro in the late evening to help me sail TB down to Cadiz where Judy was meeting up with me. Even though he seemed unconcerned, it must have been a bit disconcerting for Tim as we motored in the dinghy out of the small boat harbour, under the low railway bridge and into the pitch black of Ria Formosa. In the distance about a mile away there we a few anchor lights of the boats in the anchorage but apart from that there was only the reflection of the lights of Faro.

Next morning in bright warm sunshine we departed Faro and headed off down the Ria. We anchored the first night at Cultara Island. We stopped there last year and is a magical place. We went for a walk ashore but this time we didn't get cut off by the tide as Judy and I did last year. The water on the Atlantic side of the island was still very cold.

During the next week, we enjoyed fantastic sailing down the coast. The wind was invariably light and from astern; the sea state was mostly flat and the sun shone brightly. We flew the spinnaker on three of the first four days. Tim caught a juicy 1kg mackerel.

Nice one!

Hightlights included:-
Ayamonte - lovely town square where families gathered in the evening.
Ilha Cristina - nice marina. The old fishing port part of town is very poor and run down but down by the beaches are rather soulless high rise holiday flats. The contrast is quite stark
El Rompido - a challenging place to get into, down a shallow channel with sand bars either side to within 100 metres of the beach and then along parallel to the beach. With a 1 metre swell, it was a white knuckle ride until we got in behind the sand spit. Then it was calm and hot and a boaters paradise.
Marina Puerto America, Cadiz - a long walk from the centre of Cadiz but you cannot fail to be impressed by the history and atmosphere of Cadiz. Narrow streets lined with balconies, people socialising in the parks and in the cafes. At the edge of the dock area, at eleven in the evening, we came across about fifty or sixty musicians with wind instruments and drums jamming away in a most relaxed manner.
Puerto Santa Maria - across the bay and up the river from Cadiz - a nice friendly yacht club with nice swimming pool and riverside bar.
